The cover image shows a famous photograph of the Cottingley Fairies – one of a series of 5 photographs that were taken by two young girls in Cottingley, near Bradford in England, around 1917. These photos caused controversy for years with both advocates for their authenticity and others certain they were fakes.In the early 1980s they admitted that they were not real, saying that the controversy had only gone on as long as it had because people wanted to believe.
Something similar could be seen in the Wayford Woods in Somerset, England when hundreds of ‘fairy doors’ began appearing in the trees and the area was inundated with tourists.
With some fairy tales dating back over 5000 years and potentially being told in a now extinct Indo-European language, it is obvious that the appeal of the little folk is nothing new.
After all, who doesn’t want to believe in a bit of magic?
