Venus is the second planet from the sun and the second brightest object in the sky after the Moon meaning it is often the first thing people spot when they look up at the night sky. In the past, it was therefore also known as the Morning Star or the Evening Star.
It is of a similar size and has a similar mass to Earth. It takes 225 days to orbit the sun and the surface temperature is around 462 degrees centigrade. It is named after the Roman god of love, Venus, who was translated as the Norse goddess Frigga, after whom Friday is named.
