A galaxy is a gravitationally bound system of stars, stellar remnants, interstellar gas, dust and dark matter. The word galaxy comes from the Greek galaxias meaning ‘milky’ in reference to our own galaxy The Milky Way. It appears as a band in the sky to us becuas the disk-shaped structure is viewed from within. The Milky Way is estimated to contain between 200 and 400 billion stars and at least 100 billion planets. There are an estimated 100 billion to 200 billion galaxies in the universe, with some predicting that others could be found as the strength of telescopes increases (Credit: Space.com)
