The hammer shape of the shark’s head is called a cephalofoil – nobody is quite sure why the shark has evolved this shape of head, but it could offer some advantages in perception or manoeuvering. Hammerhead sharks are found worldwide and often move as part of a school during the day and hunt alone at night.

There are ten known species of hammerhead sharks.
