Multicultural Children’s Book Day will be happening on 27th January this year and I am really excited to be reading and reviewing three e-books in connection with it. I am always on the lookout for diverse, multicultural books because I believe that what we read to our children should represent the diversity and variety of reality. I particularly like books with positive views about being multilingual or multicultural, so I will be linking a few of my favourites in the lead-up to the event too.
The three books I will be reading and reviewing this year are:
London Hat Hunting Mission by Winnie Mak Tselikas
Johnny Skip 2 by Quentin Holmes
Sporty Lou by Quentin Holmes
While you’re here, why not check out some of the other diverse books I have reviewed?
A Different Pond (Vietnamese immigrants to America)
Love, Hate and Other Filters (Muslim family in America after terror attack)
Do you Speak Chocolate? (Refugee family making a new life in the UK)
I Wore my Blackest Hair (Chinese-American childhood in poetry)
Turtle Island (Non-fiction look at history and mythology of Native Americans)
How to Catch a Witch (Positive representation of a girl with a stutter)
A Fish in Foreign Waters (bilingualism and biculturalism as a positive)
Violet (Little girl who wonders why her skin is a different colour to her classmates)
Lots more here: Book Reviews
This event is a great way to publicize multicultural children’s books and find representation so every child can see themselves in a book somewhere.
I have linked further information about the event below:
Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/18) is in its 5th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
