S4S: Books that made me cry
Oops, am a week late with this one as school has been so busy! I cry a lot at books and movies so this week was hard, not because of trying to think of six but trying to narrow i down to six…really, it might be easier to name a a book that I haven’t cried at!
Here are six books from a selection of many that have reduced me to tears. Not just a quiet sob, but full-on ugly crying. In a few cases, I have not been able to see the page so have had to stop and calm down before continuing reading…
Bridge to Terabithia
This is a classic for a reason. I read and reread this as a kid after finding it in the library and it has never failed to touch me and bring me to tears, even after I knew what was going to happen.
One
If you haven’t read Sarah Crossan you are in for a treat. She is one of my ‘insta-read’ authors because of the clarity and emotion she brings to the page in so few words. This beautiful story of conjoined twins sucks you in and kicks your heart into smithereens.
The Adventures of Robin Hood
I was and still am a big fan of Robin Hood (although I only just watched the live-action movie recently. I had the Disney movie on repeat…). There are a few different versions of the story, but there is one particular ending involving betrayal which gets me every time.
The Art of Racing in the Rain
I picked this up at the library without knowing anything about it and instantly fell in love. I have recommended this book to lots of people (even bought my mum a copy) but it does come with a health warning as you will be sobbing your heart out. A book that will stay with me.
Me Before You
Most people have heard of this now, thanks to the controversial movie, yet I always find books more emotionally impactful. I cried a lot during this one!
The Dollmaker of Krakow
This is, without a doubt, one of the best books I have ever read…and yet i will have to steel myself to read it again because I cried so hard whilst reading it. Near the end of the book my boyfriend’s parents called and asked to speak to me – I had to promise to call them back later because I couldn’t even speak for crying!
What did you think of my choices?
Have you read any of these excellent books?
Which books have made you cry?
Let me know in the comments!

The film of Bridge to Terabithia made me cry so much when I watched it when I was younger!

I never even knew that there was a film! The book is brilliant though – I reread it again recently and it is still just as good 🙂

There is indeed a film, and I loved it when I was young. I think it was made by Disney. I still have the DVD and keep meaning yo rewatch it x

I will look it up. Although knowing my record with films it may be a few years before I actually watch it! I still have yet to watch Pretty in Pink…sorry!

Bridge to Terabithia and Me Before You both got me! I quit reading BtoT as a read aloud to my class as I’m not a pretty crier🤣

I have teared up when reading aloud to my class before… I still remember a book called Let’s get a pup, when a family goes to the animal sanctuary to adopt a puppy and see this lovely, old, creaky dog who is so happy to see them, but they can only take the pup…😭

I have friends who do too. I grew up in an all guy household so learned not to cry or they’d be merciless
