Summary (from Goodreads):

In a land of elves, mermaids and trolls, true magic is where you least expect it…

In the snow-covered city of Londra, young Tabetha survives by finding treasures in the mudbanks of the river Themse. On Christmas Eve, a sinister stranger asks her to keep her eyes open for a priceless, long-lost magical object: the Glass of Lead and Gold.

As word of the Glass spreads across the city, Tabetha finds herself with some unlikely companions, not least a one-armed girl and a rather impressive soup chef. But will Tabetha discover that there are even greater fortunes to be found than the magical Glass?

Why I can’t wait to read this book:

  • I love Cornelia Funke‘s books and particularly love the Reckless series which is set in the Mirrorworld, where this book will be set.
  • The Mirrorworld is one of my favourite fictional worlds because it is a place where all of the fairytales are true and they all have a darker side to them than the sanitized modern versions. I am interested to see another corner of this world explored, after following Jacob and Fox through so many other places in it.
  • This sounds like a wonderfully-atmospheric story to read in the colder, darker months when it seems as if the characters from folklore really could be hiding around the corner.
  • I am intrigued by magical objects and the people who trade in them. I want to know more about Tabetha and how she ended up where she is. Her odd companions sound interesting too!
  • This should give me something to tide me over until the fourth book in the Reckless series comes out next year!

What do you think?

Does this sound like the kind of book you would enjoy?
