Monthly Round-Up for August

August has been my summer holiday, but it has been surprisingly busy – we’ve had a wedding (not ours!), a trip to Austria to stay with my other half’s parents, lots of work around the house, etc!

This was a good reading month for me because I’ve been off work and we spent a whole week doing pretty much nothing apart from eating, sleeping and reading! I was hoping to make a dent in my backlogged ARCs and have done so…but have *accidentally* requested some more…
I read some really great books this month. Some highlights include Jelly, The Gilded Wolves, Evie’s Ghost, The Girl with the Dragon Heart, Orphan Monster Spy, The Boy on the Bride, A Closed and Common Orbit and Wonderstruck.

August Achievements and Highlights
Getting my classroom sorted out was a major achievement – I spent almost a week clearing out my old classroom, the room I have now moved into and a storage cupboard which was thick with dust so I could actually put resources away. Then I couldn’t spend much time in my new classroom as the roof was being repaired…finally got in just a few days ago and it is looking like a classroom rather than a building site now!
Finally building the chest of drawers I bought a few months ago – it may have taken me hours and I’m not saying that there wasn’t a bit if foul temper at times with how useless the instruction were, but it is finally finished and our clothes have a home other than stacked up plastic storage boxes.
We have a lovely holiday with my partner’s parents (we did practically nothing but it was so relaxing) but I’m disappointed that I didn’t get over to Ireland to see my parents.
August Favourites
Food/Drink: Recently I am obsessed with eating pretzels, I have no idea why. I blame it on our regular trips to Austria where my partner’s parents live, as they have these yummy snacks (Crusticroc anyone?) which are like pretzels, but straight. So good!
Skincare: I found a spray-on body mousturiser which is mostly water, with some aloe vera and shea butter. Not only does it smell great but it is cooling and provides great mouisture for such a light lotion – even better, I got it in Austria for less than 2 euro…just wish I had bought more than one!
TV/Film: Finally managed to watch some movies, including the long-awaited The Greatest Showman. I also saw Les Miserables, Deadpool 2, Coco, Jurassic World and the new Jumanji film. I loved the Greatest Showman and Coco (I cried!). Deadpool 2 I had seen already, but enjoyed it more the second time around. Jurassic World made very little sense but was a lot of fun. Jumanji was, surprisingly, actually quite fun too – I had expected it to be terrible! At the beginning of Les Miserables, I wasn’t convinced by everyone singing everything, but I became so invested in the characters by the end.

Oh my word, what an amazing amount of books read. I managed 12 books which is great for me although most of them were audiobooks and quite short in comparison to books I usually read.
I have a few of these on my TBR or wish list – Orphan Monster Spy, Fawkes, The Witch’s Kiss, Grim Lovelies and Furyborn – and I’m trying to find the right time to read them. If I get a copy of Fawkes, I think I might try reading it around November as it feels fitting to read it on or near Bonfire Night.

Yes, it would be great to read Fawkes around Bonfire Night, although the events of the book cover several years and months before the event. Well done on your 12 books! August is usually my best reading month as I am off work and normally have a week or two where I can just read without doing much else! I also read tonnes of books for kids and picture books which are quite short. I enjoyed all of those on your TBR list, but I would probably say that Orphan Monster Spy was my favourite of them, followed by Grim Lovelies, then Furyborn. I read the whole Witch’s Kiss trilogy in just over a day – great to be able to read it all at once as there are a few cliffhangers! What was your favourite read of this month?

August is a good month for that. I get a little bit more free time too due to the summer holidays but I most of the time find it hard getting the time to read, especially during the day because being a carer and on and off interpreter is incredibly tiring.
Oh wow. I only have the first book in the Witch’s Kiss trilogy so I wouldn’t be able to do that. I also don’t have the time to read them all back to back in a day. Also I can see myself enjoying Orphan Monster Spy the most so I think that’s the one I will try first.
I think my favourite read this month is a tie between The Price’s Guide to the Occult, The Subtle Knife, Are We All Lemmings and Snowflakes? and City of Ghosts.

The amount you manage to read every month is amazing! I really like lots of the books you read, and I’m looking forward to getting to some others such as the Sand Dog, the Girl with the Dragon Heart, Secrets of the Night Train, Jelly and YOLO. Are you moving year group this year, or just classroom?

I read quickly, but am awful at actually sitting down to write a review…I would usually prefer just to read another book! All of those that you’ve mentioned to-be-read are fantastic, especially Jelly! I am staying in Year 3, just moving down the corridor by one classroom. After a few days of hard work it is finally starting to look like a classroom instead of a building site…What is your next read? I’ve just started The Book of Boy and enjoying it so far!

Ooh, that was my last read and I had very mixed feelings on it! I’m now almost finished Peril in Paris, which I am loving even more than I thought I would, and then I think I’m going to read Warrior Boy x

Finished The Book of Boy this morning and see what you mean about mixed feelings. Then read The Boy Who Grew Dragons which was very cute. Not sure what to read after that!

August is my time off work so can read a lot, plus I have lots of picture books in there too 🙂 I’m glad you like the format – I find it quite a nice way to sum up the month and it often makes me realise what I’ve achieved, even if something has gone wrong! What was your favourite read this month?
