2018 Blogging Stats
How has 2018 been for you?
Has your blog grown or has it fallen by the wayside?
Stats are those things that we all really care about, but somehow don’t talk about that often.
People always say that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others, but it is difficult not to care about stats, especially as they are one of the few ways you can measure your blog’s ‘success’.
This year my stats have been all over the place, mainly due to life also getting busy. 2018 is the first full year that I have been blogging, as I started in July/August 2017.Over the year my blog has changed as I have experimented with different content and learned more about blogging. I still have a long way to go, but I feel like I have learned a lot this year and met some wonderful people!
Let’s have a look at some stats!
This year I have had nearly 21,000 views and 12, 000 visitors. For some this might seem like a lot, for others very few, but it is a definite upturn from 2017 where I had just under 5000 views and 3000 visitors over the year.
I have averaged ~1800-2000 page views a month and ~66 visitors per day, which I am pretty happy with!
I am also happy to see an increase in the number of comments on my posts, as I have been trying to blog hop and support other blogs as much as possible. In 2017 I had 283 comments on posts – this year I have had ~1600 comments so far! (I am using approximate figures as writing this before December 31st so there may be changes!)
The average page views per person is still 1.78, so I need to continue trying to increase my use of links and images in posts to encourage people to spend some more time on the blog after clicking through to read a post. When I visit other blogs I always click on at least two or three more posts so I would love to increase the amount of time that people spend reading my blog too.
My most popular posts published this year have been:

I hadn’t been expecting that so many book reviews would be in the Top 5, as many bloggers say that they are their least-viewed posts. However, I don’t post discussion posts, which are seen to be the most popular, so perhaps that’s why my reviews get more views. I work quite hard on my reviews, but also have a number of posts that I have worked really hard on which haven’t been as popular!

Strangely, whilst book tags and memes such as How to annoy a bookworm in 5 easy steps, 7 skills every bookworm has developed and Secret Life of a Book Blogger, are popular when first posted, they don’t seem to attract long-term visits.
My five least viewed posts have all been individual Multilingual flashcards, which is unsurprising as they are very specific to what somebody would like to learn in their target language. However, my page where all the the flashcards are collected in one place continues to be really popular!
If I include posts published last year too, my top 5 are:
- Talk to me in Korean: Lessons 1-7
- Korean: Basic Conversation Part 1 – Greetings
- Multilingual flashcard: Penguin
- Roald Dahl themed Maths Resources for Book Week
- Mathematics: Games for Learning Place Value
I can understand why the first two Korean posts are popular as they are perfect introductions for anyone beginning to learn Korean and I’m glad that they’ve been useful to so many people! I’m still not entirely sure why the Penguin in 10 languages continues to be so popular, but I guess that lots of people like penguins!
The last two in the Top 5 are teaching resources, both containing free, downloadable resources which I have created. Despite the fact that I can see that lots of people have downloaded them , I am yet to have anyone comment to say thanks or say how they used them, Poor, busy teachers!
Despite a bit of a slump in December, due to illness and general ‘life’ getting in the way, I have blogged quite consistently this year, as well as identifying more of the direction I would like to take my blog in during 2019. I will be posting about some of what I have learnt and some of what I am hoping to achieve in 2019 soon!

I plan on blogging my 2018 stats soon as 2018 was my best year ever. In a way, it’s the first year I made blogging a priority even though I started back in 2013. My stats are around 17,000 views and 12,000 visitors. My followers were around 70 for end of the year, not sure about this morning as my phone doesn’t show followers.
I need to check out what happened when my numbers jumped up early in the year. December was down a bit, but I figured holidays played a part. I know ways that would boost my numbers, but those are the things I prefer not to do.
Some of your posts sound interesting so I will be checking them out. I am a bookworm although one blogger says we should call ourselves book dragons.

Congratulations on a great year in 2018! I think that most people see a dip in their stats around back-to-school times and in late November onwards due to life getting busy for lots of people. I have seen people talk about being a book dragon rather than a bookworm and I love the idea! Either way, I love books so both names are fine for me! 😁 I will have a look at your blog too, thanks for reading and commenting!

Good thank you, apart from an accidental hiatus in April. I can’t even remember what I was doing but it must have been something stressful (possibly having a kitchen fitted). I’m feeling very organised at the moment – we’ll have to see how long it lasts! 😂

My stat’s have only really picked up towards the end of the year as I took quite a few blogging breaks in the first half! But it feels to good to be back and posting regularly again, I’m definitely hoping to up my game this year. Here’s to hoping! 💖

Welcome back! I think that posting regularly and consistently is the toughest thing because life gets in the way and it is rarely completely predictable! I always notice dips in stats around August and December, but it’s especially noticeable when I haven’t posted for a while – guess it’s due to not appearing in everyone feeds/ wordpress reader? Wow! Our stats are remarkably similar, except for comments – I need to meet some more of the lovely bloggers in this community. I would love to self-host this year but I am so worried about the risks and the transition. Have you considered this?

I’ve thought about self-hosting, but probably wouldn’t consider it seriously for another while – first I have to see if I can keep up blogging consistently! The main reasons why I would like to do it would be having my own domain name, more space for images and more flexibility with plug-ins. In particular, my blog is quite image-heavy so I’m a little worried that I might use up my free allowance! Do you think yo;re going to go for it and self-host? I’ve met some amazing people through blogging and Twitter, which has been great. Sorry for dropping off the face of the Earth during December! Happy New Year! x

Not sure that I would be much help with any real answers about self-hosting but am definitely up for a long-overdue catch up. December just exhausted me so finally starting to get back to normal this week! x

Thank you so much for reading and commenting! I noticed that not many people talk about their actual stats but we are naturally nosy and I find it really useful to see what kind of posts do well, which days are most popular etc. I started blogging properly in August 2017, so 2018 was my first full year and I am over the moon with the improvement. I think it’s important for each blogger to find their niche, and experiment with whatever they want to talk about! Good luck with achieving your blogging goals! 🙂

Congrats on your views!! That is an awesome number compared to your 2017 views! (and I agree some people will think that its a lot and others will think its a little, when really you can only compare it to how you have done and how it makes you feel!)

Thank you! Yes, I think it’s tough not to compare yourself to people who seem to get more views and better stats despite being around for the same amount of time, or to look at an established blogger and hope for instant success. I’m just happy that my content is useful/ enjoyable for some people and that the numbers are going up! 🙂

Great job getting your stats up! I always share mine monthly (and still need to post my yearly one). Mostly for myself, but also because I agree that we don’t talk about it a lot. And I just love keeping track of statistics for things.

The stats of what most popular can look odd … like why certain posts popular not. In my stats home page always has a lot, I think that is because ppl read post without clicking through to it? But that means hard to see which posts actually read.

I think that a lot of people read posts through the wordpress reader, rather than clicking through to your blog. I’m not sure if this counts for your views or not. My browser doesn’t allow me to click ‘like’ when I’m on a post so I have to click ‘like’ in the reader, then click through to the website to read!
