Six for Sunday: Couples who need a sequel
The prompts for #SixforSunday have been TOUGH this month! I cam up with a few couples straightaway, but others took me longer, particularly for series where revealing the couples could actually be a spoiler… or where there are still book due to come out in the series…so I had to choose carefully.
Here are a few couples who I think deserve a bit more time together on the page:
Jack and Pippa from The Light Between Worlds by Laura E. Weymouth
Five years ago, Evelyn and Philippa Hapwell cowered from air strikes in a London bomb shelter. But that night took a turn when the sisters were transported to another realm called the Woodlands. In a forest kingdom populated by creatures out of myth and legend, they found temporary refuge.
When they finally returned to London, nothing had changed at all—nothing, except themselves.
Now, Ev spends her days sneaking into the woods outside her boarding school, wishing for the Woodlands. Overcome with longing, she is desperate to return no matter what it takes.
Philippa, on the other hand, is determined to find a place in this world. She shields herself behind a flawless exterior and countless friends, and moves to America to escape the memory of what was.
But when Evelyn goes missing, Philippa must confront the depth of her sister’s despair and the painful truths they’ve been running from.
This book looks at the after-effects of visiting another, magical world and is just stunning. Both of the romances are so delicate, warm and beautiful. I would love to see more of Jack and Pippa, especially in the aftermath of the ending of The Light Between Worlds. See my full review here.
Tiffy and Leon from The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

Tiffy and Leon have never met…
Tiffy Moore needs a cheap flat, and fast. Leon Twomey works nights and needs cash. Their friends think they’re crazy, but it’s the perfect solution: Leon occupies the one-bed flat while Tiffy’s at work in the day, and she has the run of the place the rest of the time.
But with obsessive ex-boyfriends, demanding clients at work, wrongly imprisoned brothers and, of course, the fact that they still haven’t met yet, they’re about to discover that if you want the perfect home you need to throw the rulebook out the window…
I stayed up late the day I borrowed this to read it after grabbing a copy from the ‘Recently Returned’ Shelf at my local library. I had been hearing so much about it that I had to get stuck in!
I was expecting a light-hearted, fun, romance that would leave me feeling warm and fuzzy. In fact, I got so much more. Not only did I immediately fall in love with Tiffy and Leon, but almost all of the supporting cast too (with the exceptions of Justin and Martin…obviously names ending in ‘tin’ = person to avoid in this book universe).
The story follows the development of Tiffy and Leon’s relationship, which was delightfully slow-burn. Every time it seemed like they might finally meet, something happened to prevent it, which made their eventual first meeting hilariously satisfying. By the time they meet face-to-face they have already learned a lot about each other and built a friendship full of trust and caring. I especially loved how both Leon’s family and Tiffy’s friends and ex-boyfriend were woven into the narrative, making these two feel like real people who you couldn’t help but love.
This is just the thing for a day when you need a bit of cheering up! A book with surprising emotional depth and characters that you will not want to say goodbye to!
A sequel would be perfect, please and thank you!
Carys and Max from Hold Back the Stars by Katie Khan
‘We’re going to be fine.’
He looks around, but there’s nothing out here: nothing but the bottomless black universe on their left, the Earth suspended in glorious technicolour to their right.
Carys and Max have ninety minutes of air left.
None of this was supposed to happen.
But, perhaps this doesn’t need to be the end…
Adrift in space with nothing to hold on to but each other, Carys and Max can’t help but look back at the well-ordered world they have left behind – at the rules they couldn’t reconcile themselves to, and a life to which they might now never return.
For in a world where love is banned, what happens when you find it?
Hold Back the Stars is a love story like no other.
This is a really original and beautiful love story – see my full review here. If you have read it you will know that the ending leaves things up to the reader’s interpretation, but I would definitely love to see more of these two.
Meg and Ed from Stargazing for Beginners by Jenny McLachlan
Science geek Meg is left to look after her little sister for ten days after her free-spirited mum leaves suddenly to follow up yet another of her Big Important Causes. But while Meg may understand how the universe was formed, baby Elsa is a complete mystery to her.
And Mum’s disappearance has come at the worst time: Meg is desperate to win a competition to get the chance to visit NASA headquarters, but to do this she has to beat close rival Ed. Can Meg pull off this double life of caring for Elsa and following her own dreams? She’ll need a miracle of cosmic proportions …
The real star relationship in this book is between Meg and her grandfather, then between her and her baby sister Elsa. However, the budding romance between her and Ed is really sweet, so I would be curious to see how it would develop in a sequel, especially with Meg’s social anxiety and some of Ed’s mean behaviour at times.
Finn and Alfie from Nocturna by Maya Montayne
Set in a Latinx-inspired world, a face-changing thief and a risk-taking prince must team up to defeat a powerful evil they accidentally unleashed.
To Finn Voy, magic is two things: a knife to hold under the chin of anyone who crosses her…and a disguise she shrugs on as easily as others pull on cloaks.
As a talented faceshifter, it’s been years since Finn has seen her own face, and that’s exactly how she likes it. But when Finn gets caught by a powerful mobster, she’s forced into an impossible mission: steal a legendary treasure from Castallan’s royal palace or be stripped of her magic forever.
After the murder of his older brother, Prince Alfehr is first in line for the Castallan throne. But Alfie can’t help but feel that he will never live up to his brother’s legacy. Riddled with grief, Alfie is obsessed with finding a way to bring his brother back, even if it means dabbling in forbidden magic.
I read and reviewed this recently, seeming to go against the crowd by really liking this book. Finn and Alfie’s relationship builds up slowly and stopped a hair short of becoming romance…but I think it will!
Cinder and Kai from Cinder by Marissa Meyer
A forbidden romance.
A deadly plague.
Earth’s fate hinges on one girl . . .
CINDER, a gifted mechanic in New Beijing, is also a cyborg. She’s reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s sudden illness. I know that we get to see more of them in the rest of the series, but I wanted more!

Ooh I agree with lots of these! And it always makes me laugh that people specify they hated Martin and Justin when talking about the Flatshare and how brilliant the supporting cast are 😂.

I was too! I’m really looking forward to an upcoming adult romance that sounds reasonably similar called Our Stop now, and of course Beth O Leary’s second novel (which is sadly not a Richie and Rachael spinoff but I can dream of that coming one day 😂😂). I’ve been debating giving Mhairi Mcfarlane a try as well, or Rachael Lucas’s adult stuff…

I saw Our Stop the other day and thought it looked cute! I will maybe look up some others, but already have so many to read that there’s no guarantee!

I’m sure that we will get more from them as there are two more books in the trilogy, but I thought that they were pretty cute 🙂
