Waiting on Wednesday: Deep and Darkest Red
Deep and Darkest Red
Written by Anna-Marie McLemore
Published by Feiwel and Friends
Publication date: 14th January 2020
Summary (from Goodreads):
Summer, 1518. A strange sickness sweeps through Strasbourg: women dance in the streets, some until they fall down dead. As rumors of witchcraft spread, suspicion turns toward Lavinia and her family, and Lavinia may have to do the unimaginable to save herself and everyone she loves.
Five centuries later, a pair of red shoes seal to Rosella Oliva’s feet, making her dance uncontrollably. They draw her toward a boy who knows the dancing fever’s history better than anyone: Emil, whose family was blamed for the fever five hundred years ago. But there’s more to what happened in 1518 than even Emil knows, and discovering the truth may decide whether Rosella survives the red shoes.
With McLemore’s signature lush prose, Dark and Deepest Red pairs the forbidding magic of a fairy tale with a modern story of passion and betrayal.
Why I can’t wait to read this:
- The story of the Red Shoes is always one that I have found both fascinating and disturbing, so I am excited to see a re-imagining of this.
- The setting in Strasbourg in 1518 sounds interesting, especially as it is based on real events where around 400 people took to the streets to dance, with some dying of exhaustion. Apparently, it wasn’t the only ‘dancing plague’ during the medieval period.
- There is mention of witchcraft – this is guaranteed to make me want to read a book!
- The author is known for writing magical realism, but I have yet to read any of her book despite really wanting to!
- That cover though…just beautiful!
